Bais Yaakov to Dear Readers,
Embassy Row By the time you read these words, Tisha b’Av will be over. We just spent nine days –
by Eta Kushner
indeed, three weeks – steeped in thoughts of galus and geula: that is, exile, suffering,
42 and alienation or their opposite, the return in joy to our Land and our G-d. Could any
two realities be more polarized? Is there any other time of the year when we ponder
Journey to Bat Yam more intensely why things happen as they do in human history? When we try so hard
by Shira Shugarman to understand the Unseen Hand that moves men and events in seemingly inscrutable
ways towards a destiny foretold long ago?

But now we’re finished with all that and into the mundane again. Back-to-school is
Shalom Bayis around the corner, with its routines of carpools, meals, and homework that have been
by Dr. Aviva Weisbord forgotten over the long summer. Politically, however, things are far from mundane. The
presidential election season is nearing the end of its long slog, and politics has become
68 unprecedentedly polarized and polarizing. Discussion between partisans of the two can-
didates has turned toxic, dialogue impossible.
Rabbi Shmuel
Dovid Siegel Talk about the Unseen Hand! A year ago, Donald Trump was not even in the uni-
verse of presidential politics. Hillary Clinton was dogged by scandals and denials. And
by his Children Bernie Sanders, who’s that? Certainly not the “meteor” of the 2016 Democratic primar-
ies. None of this was probable. Indeed, many thought (hoped?) it was not possible. But
76 they were wrong.

Addressing Suicide Whom to vote for? Hillary, the corrupt, albeit self-styled “sane,” candidate with the
by Amanda Kuperman who-knows-what policy towards Israel? Or Trump, the crass, half-brilliant-half-insane
guy backed by Nazis but with a shomer Shabbos daughter and a platform on Israel
82 written by his two frum advisors from Teaneck? It is easy to be overwhelmed by these
two unbearable options, and we cannot help but wonder what larger fate each of them

But there is more to life than Hillary and Donald, at least for us Jews. Elul is soon
94 upon us, beckoning us to turn inward (even as we keep our eyes peeled to the news
and anxiously follow events in Eretz Yisrael and at home). Elul calls us to an account-
An Ounce of Prevention ing session with our selves. And who knows whether it is not that very process of turn-
by Dr. Shmuel Golfeyz ing inward in teshuva that is ultimately responsible for our fate? We will vote, yes, but
galus and geula are in the hands of G-d.
