I love fall. I love when the bright glare of summer sun gives way to the mellow golds of autumn sunsets. When the harsh summer heat yields to the more temperate breezes of shorter days and longer nights. I gladly trade the primary summer colors of blue lakes, red snow cones, and yellow sun for the rich sophistication of the brown, orange, and rust colored leaves littering my yard.



Summer is an outward yelp, “Hoorah!” but fall is an internal, deeply inhaled “Aahhh...” What summer does for the body, autumn does for the soul. In summer I throw off layer after layer of monotonous responsibility; come fall I rewrap myself in each one like an old familiar shawl, keeping me safe and contained in the contentment of choices I have made, blessings I have received.



The pleasures of summer are primal – the dribble of watermelon juice, the late mornings slept in, cool surf against the heated sand. The sensory richness of fall speaks to a whole other level of ethereal reality – the senses of the soul. The aroma of freshly baked apples, the deeply inhaled crisp autumn air, Hashem’s palettes hanging from each tree, all touch my soul deeply. If summer is to indulge the “me” and to give it a well-deserved recharge, fall is to nurture and revive the longings within for a genuine connection far beyond. Ani ledodi vedodi li…
